1987 ALUMNI REUNION
72ND BANQUET
MINUTES - MAY 23, 1987
The 72nd Annual Henderson High School Alumni Banquet was held at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 23, 1987, at the Little League Gym. The 51 members and guests were extended a welcome by President Jesse Brown, followed by the invocation by Wanda Williams. A delicious ham buffet dinner was served by the ladies of the Little League, as well as some of their daughters. They were given a hearty reception for the delicious meal and efficient service.
President Brown began the Roll Call of Classes with 1916. Mrs. Juanita Melendy was present from that Class – as well as 1917. We were also glad to hear that Mr. Melvin McGrew, who was born in 1888, and Class of 1906, and resides at the Stanton Care Center is quite well and alert. Thanks to Everett McGrew for sharing news from Melvin. The youngest member present was Kim Peterson of the Class of 1986.
The minutes of the 1986 banquet were read, as well as the Treasurer’s Report. We began this year with a balance of $259.08. Postage bill was $16.80, new checks about $8.00 (approximately), $5.00 for nuts for nut cups, $4.00 candy for cups. Current bills for banquet will be paid. The Little League received $6.00 per plate for meal plus gym rent.
Vicky Putnam presented the following slate of officers for 1988:
President – Beatrice Springer Buffington; 1st Vice-President – Abbie Stenger Duysen; 2nd Vice-President – Bill Harbor; Secretary and Treasurer – Wanda Bowen Williams; Historian – Ruby Smith Godfrey.
The above were duly elected by acclamation.
Historian Ruby Godfrey gave her interesting report of Alumni for this past year. We also appreciated the use of her sound system for the Banquet. It certainly made it easier to hear all the speakers.
With no further business, the meeting was turned over to Program Chairman, Joyce Lathrop. She read a humorous and delightful poem of “The Class of 1937.” It reminded us of many old memories.
Haley Horgdal and Jill Rieken then presented a dance routine for us.
Joyce then played two musical selections on her saw.
To close the Program, a hat fashion parade was given by several volunteers, narrated by Joyce. Thanks to Joyce for putting together a fun Program for everyone.
Potted geraniums that were table centerpieces were given away by drawing to several present. They were provided by Bob Magers and Vera Skank. They were very pretty.
The balance of the evening was spent with visiting and will look forward to next year.

1988 ALUMNI REUNION
73RD BANQUET
MINUTES - MAY 28, 1988
The 73rd Annual Henderson High School Alumni Banquet was held at the Little League Gym on Saturday evening, May 28, 1988. We were so very pleased to have 101 Alumni and guests present for the chicken and roast beef dinner served by Catherine’s Catering of Council Bluffs. This was the best attendance we have had in several years, and hope the interest will continue.
After dinner we were happy to have the members of the NV jazz band, under the direction of Randy Ballard, play a number of selections from their program. They did a fine job. Thanks to them for coming. A ‘Thank You’ gift of $25 was given to them.
Master of Ceremonies Bill Harbor presided at the business meeting that followed. The minutes of the last year’s Banquet were read, as was the Treasurer’s Report by Wanda Williams. They were accepted as reported. Our balance at the beginning of this year was $227.28, and all current banquet bills were directed to be paid.
A very informative report was given by Historian, Ruby Godfrey. She also reminded us that our oldest living Alumni, Melvin McGrew, will celebrate his 100th birthday on August 26. He is a resident at the Stanton Care Center, and would appreciate our birthday greetings via the mail.
With no old business, we then proceeded to the Report from the Nominating Report given by Judy Magers. Those nominated were:
President, Bill Harbor; 1st Vice-President, Abbie Stenger, Duysen; 2nd Vice-President, Jo Ann Taylor Houser; Secretary/Treasurer, Wanda Bowen Williams; Historian, Ruby Smith Godfrey
They were all elected by acclamation.
The Roll Call of Classes was begun with the Class of 1925. Minnie Allensworth was the only representative from it. After all Alumni were recognized, some of the members of the honor classes told something of their memb3ers. Lois Meadows Murray of the 1958 Class introduced the four women from their Class. Max Simmons of the 1948 Class was present for the first time in many years, plus one other member from their Class. Eight of the eleven members of the 1943 were present and each gave a brief review of their life since graduation. Receiving a special recognition was the 50-year Class who graduated on May 11, 1938. Four of their members, Beatrice Springer Buffington, Bernice Springer Copeland, Harry E. Paul, and Bill Harbor, were present to tell about their respective families. Harry was pleased to have all five of their children along with him and his wife, Jane. How nice! His daughter, Kathy Toman, read a clever original poem to the delight of all present.
With no further business the Banquet was adjourned. Some of the Honor Classes enjoyed parties after the meeting to further reminisce with one another. We hope to have another large attendance when we will meet again next year on May 27, 1989.

1989 ALUMNI REUNION
74TH BANQUET
MINUTES - MAY 27, 1989
The 74th Annual Henderson Alumni Banquet met on Saturday, May 27, 1989 at the Little League Gym. Wow! Were we excited to have 139 persons in attendance. That is a record – at least, for lots of years! We hope to keep up the good work. We know it was through the efforts of a number of graduates who contacted their respective Classes.
President Bill Harbor gave the invocation before the delicious ham buffet dinner was served by the ladies of the Little League. “The Music Company,” a group of men and of women from the Stanton-Red Oak area, entertained with a delightful variety of musical selections. Some of their songs were surely favorites of those present. Thanks to Bill Harbor for donating the remuneration for the group for our Program. We appreciated that, very much.
Secretary-Treasurer Wanda Williams gave those respective Reports. Our balance at the close of the 1988 banquet was $251.80.
Ruby Godfrey gave her very interesting and informative Historian’s Report.
President Bill Harbor expressed his appreciation in the “turn-out” in regards to the good attendance for this year.
Chairman Judy Magers presented the Report from the Nominating Committee. It was:
President – Jo Ann Taylor Hours; 1st Vice-President, Vicky Wilber Putnam; 2nd Vice-President – Elizabeth Sutton Edmondson; Secretary/Treasurer – Wanda Bowen Williams; Historian – Ruby Smith Godfrey.
With no other nominations, they were duly elected by acclamation.
The Roll Call of Classes began with 1925 with Minnie Gravett Allensworth responding as the only one present. She recalled some of her basketball memories.
Bill read a letter he recently received from Virginia Patterson, widow of the late Lloyd “Pat” Patterson, graduate of the Class of 1931. Pat had been inducted into the Iowa High School Hall of Fame some years ago and in March 3, 1989, he became a member of the University of Nebraska Athletic Hall of Fame, both Honors due to his outstanding basketball talents.
The Class of 1929, the 60-year Honor Class, was represented by Mary Cary Hartigan of Inman, Nebraska, Sam Taylor of Red Oak, Elva Wilson Nyren, of Henderson, and Lenora Simmonds Jones of Omaha. Mary told some about the Class on their behalf. Others not present were Grace Edmondson Fisher of Washington, Fern Gravett Buis of Omaha, and Edna Clark Wiegman of Henderson.
The 50-year Honor Class, 1939, had six members present from their graduating class of twelve. They were Annie Jane Springer Gilson of Onaga, Kansas, Beth Wilson Miller of Golden, Colorado, Loretta Davis Johansen, Charles Bea of Mayfield, Kentucky, Donald Whitehead of Osceola, and Lester DeBolt of Henderson.
A letter from Betty Plumb Sprague of Florida was read by Beth Miller and a phone message was shared from Joyce Nesbitt Anderson of Des Moines, two of those not able to be present.
Some of the other Classes had a good representation present, too, which made for the good attendance for the Banquet.
With no further business, the meeting was adjourned until 1990.
We surely look forward to another good crowd at that time. The rest of the evening was spent renewing old acquaintances and visiting with everyone.

1990 ALUMNI REUNION
75TH BANQUET
MINUTES - MAY 26, 1990
116 members and guests gathered at the Little League Gym in Henderson on Saturday, May 26, 1990 for the 75th Annual Henderson High School Alumni Banquet. Wanda Williams gave the invocation before all were seated to enjoy the delicious roast beef dinner served by the ladies (and men and children) of the local Little League.
After the meal President Jo Ann Houser opened the business meeting. Elizabeth Edmondson gave the welcome to all present. Secretary-Treasurer Wanda Williams gave those respective Reports. The balance at the beginning of this year was $355.09 – postage was $15.00; other bills to be submitted later. Both Reports were approved as read.
Ruby Godfrey, who has served as Historian since 1954, gave her interesting Report. She reported that our oldest living Alumni, Eva Braden Livasy, had passed away during the past year.
After some deliberation, the following officers were elected:
President – Vicky Wilber Putnam; 1st Vice-President – Elizabeth Sutton Edmondson; 2nd Vice-President – Jo Ann Taylor Houser; Secretary/Treasurer – Wanda Bowen Williams; Historian – Ruby Smith Godfrey.
Charles Paul was M.C. for the Roll Call of Classes. Present from the Class of 1930 were Sy Brown of Henderson and Marlin “Wink” Wilkinson of Sun City, Arizona. Absent was Harold Byers of Carson. Sy and Wink told of their basketball team – the first to ever go to the State Tourney. They had won 32 straight games. There were 42 students in the high school. At the State, they were defeated by Davenport by only four points, even though the score at the half was 20 – 5. The ball used at the State was on the display table. (Wink interjected that maybe one reason they won so many games was because they were always treated to malted milks at the local café.)
Present from the Class of 1935 were Wilma Edson McKee of Longmont, Colorado and Eunice Rieken and Joyce Lathrop from Henderson. Joyce also read letters from Doris Triplett, Duane Norton and Eleanor Edmondson Haley.
All six living members of the Class of 1940 were present for this special 50-year anniversary. They were Merl Core of Ames; Kenneth Parker of Vancouver, Washington; Norris Triplett of Red Oak; Wade Freeman, Clarinda; Virgil “Bud” Harold of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Don Allensworth of Macedonia. Ken spoke about visiting the school as it was being torn down, fond memories of classmates, and other interesting stories (?) to the delight of the audience. He concluded with the following original poem:
“REUNIONS
Fifty year reunions are very hard to come by
Some don’t make it, no matter how hard they try.
I feel very lucky to be here on this day
And hope to be alive on many more 26th of May.
As I look around the crowd and wonder about your age
I’ll ask you the year you graduated and let that be the gauge.
Maybe all our studying and antics weren’t quite in vain
But I wonder what we’d do different if we could do it again.
Sometimes old friends are very hard to come by.
I’ll sure remember you guys till the day I die.
So here I am and only 67
In fifty years we’ll all meet again, only the banquet will be in Heaven.”
By Ken Parker
Virginia McKinney Bowen was the only one present from the Class of 1950. She and Floyd had celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary the night before. A letter was read from Darrell Parker. Present from the 1955 Class were Betty Hendrix Jefferis, Bob Stille, and Bob Roeder. Betty also shared a letter from Betty Kahl Williams.
Six were present from the 1960 Class: Alice Rieken Brown, Robert Fleming, Richard Wiegman, Judy Harold Smith, Doris Morris Harmon, and Velda Wallace Myers.
We were happy to have Todd Putnam, a member of the Class of 1990, with us for the evening. Welcome Todd!
Jo Ann then presented Honorary Alumni Certificates to Jane Paul, Darlene Roeder, Don Godfrey, Arnold Williams, and Kathryn Wigstone (she was absent). These were in recognition to their dedication and loyalty they have given for many years. Congratulations! We’re glad you’re now – ONE OF US!
After adjournment of the meeting, Vicky Putnam presented a Program of local talents and also some of the talented grandchildren of Alumni. A variety of piano solos, dance routines, accordion and musical saw selections, and vocal numbers were enjoyed.
Later everyone enjoyed visiting and looking over the display of Class pictures. We all look forward to the reunion next year.
